Equal Angle Steel is an L-shaped structural section with two legs of equal length, making it one of the most versatile steel profiles in construction and fabrication. Used for frames, brackets, supports, and reinforcement, equal angles provide excellent strength in multiple directions. Available in sizes from 50x50 to 200x200 with thicknesses from 6mm to 24mm, all angles are cut to your exact length requirements. Choose from self-colour (unpainted) or shotblast painted finish for enhanced corrosion protection. Supplied to BS EN 10056 S275JR specification. Contact Next Day Steel on 020 8079 7719 for technical advice and next-day UK delivery (subject to stock and location).

Frequently Asked Questions
What do the numbers mean (e.g., 100x100x10)?
The first two numbers are the leg lengths in millimetres (both equal for equal angles), and the third number is the thickness. So 100x100x10 means both legs are 100mm long with a 10mm material thickness.
What is the difference between equal angles and unequal angles?
Equal angles have two legs of the same length (e.g., 100x100), while unequal angles have legs of different lengths (e.g., 150x100). Equal angles are more commonly used for general construction and fabrication where symmetrical loading or appearance is required.
How do I choose the right size equal angle?
Selection depends on the load requirements, span length, and application. For structural applications, you may need calculations from an engineer. For general fabrication, consider the load to be supported and the connection method. Call us on 020 8079 7719 for guidance.
Can equal angles be used as lintels?
Yes, equal angles are commonly used as lintels, often in pairs placed back-to-back to form a T-shape or with a flat bar welded across the top. For structural lintels, you'll need engineering calculations to determine the correct size for your span and load.
What is the difference between self colour and shotblast painted?
Self colour (no paint) is the natural mill finish - ideal if you plan to paint, galvanise, or weld the steel yourself. Shotblast painted includes a red oxide primer coating applied after shot blasting, providing temporary corrosion protection and a clean surface ready for top coating.
What steel grade are the equal angles?
Our equal angles are supplied to BS EN 10056 S275JR specification, the standard structural steel grade used throughout the UK construction industry. S275JR offers excellent weldability and is suitable for all general structural and fabrication applications.
Can equal angles be cut to any length?
Yes, we cut equal angles to your specified length. Simply enter your required length in millimetres when ordering. Minimum order length is 100mm. Maximum stock lengths are typically 12 metres.
How is the weight of an equal angle calculated?
Equal angle weight depends on the leg size, thickness, and length. The weight per metre varies by section - for example, a 100x100x10 angle weighs approximately 15.0 kg/m. Our online calculator automatically works this out based on your selected size and length.
Can equal angles be welded?
Yes, S275JR equal angles are fully weldable using standard MIG, TIG, or arc welding methods. The corner radius should be considered when welding - ensure good penetration at the root of the angle.
Are equal angles suitable for outdoor use?
Untreated mild steel will rust when exposed to moisture. For outdoor use, we recommend the shotblast painted option as a base, followed by appropriate top coats. For long-term outdoor exposure, consider hot-dip galvanising after fabrication.
Do you offer next day delivery on equal angles?
Yes, we offer next day delivery across mainland UK on orders placed before our cut-off time, subject to stock availability and delivery location. Contact us for delivery to Scotland, highlands, and islands.
What thickness should I choose?
Thicker angles are stronger but heavier and more expensive. For light-duty brackets and framing, 6-8mm is often sufficient. For structural applications and heavier loads, 10-15mm or more may be required. When in doubt, consult an engineer or call us for advice.
