Universal Columns (UC) are H-shaped structural steel sections designed primarily for vertical load-bearing applications. With equal or near-equal flange width to depth, UCs provide excellent resistance to buckling and are the standard choice for steel columns, posts, and vertical supports in UK construction. Available in sizes from 152x152 to 254x254 with various kg/m weights, all columns are cut to your exact length requirements. Choose from self-colour (unpainted) or shotblast painted finish for enhanced corrosion protection. Supplied to BS EN 10025 S275JR specification. Contact Next Day Steel on 020 8079 7719 for technical advice and next-day UK delivery (subject to stock and location).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Universal Column (UC) and a Universal Beam (UB)?
Universal Columns have a nearly square profile (depth approximately equal to flange width), making them ideal for carrying vertical loads. Universal Beams are deeper and narrower, optimised for bending loads across spans. UCs resist buckling better when used vertically, while UBs are more efficient for horizontal spanning applications.
What do the numbers mean (e.g., 203x203)?
Both numbers represent the approximate dimensions in millimetres - the first is the depth and the second is the flange width. For Universal Columns, these are typically equal or very close. The kg/m weight indicates how heavy the column is per metre length and relates to the web and flange thickness.
How do I choose the right size Universal Column?
Column selection depends on the load to be carried, the unsupported height (effective length), and the end restraint conditions. Structural calculations from a qualified engineer are required to determine the correct size. Call us on 020 8079 7719 for general guidance.
Why are there different kg/m weights for the same size?
The external dimensions remain similar, but heavier sections have thicker webs and flanges, providing greater load-carrying capacity. A 203x203x52 UC has thinner material than a 203x203x127 UC, but the 127kg version can carry significantly more load.
What is the difference between self colour and shotblast painted?
Self colour (no paint) is the natural mill finish - ideal if you plan to paint, galvanise, or apply fire protection yourself. Shotblast painted includes a red oxide primer coating applied after shot blasting, providing temporary corrosion protection and a clean surface ready for top coating or intumescent paint.
What steel grade are the Universal Columns?
Our Universal Columns are supplied to BS EN 10025 S275JR specification, the standard structural steel grade used throughout the UK construction industry. S275JR offers excellent weldability and is suitable for all general structural applications.
Can Universal Columns be cut to any length?
Yes, we cut Universal Columns to your specified length. Simply enter your required length in millimetres when ordering. Minimum order length is 100mm.
Do I need Building Regulations approval to install a steel column?
Yes, structural alterations involving steel columns typically require Building Regulations approval. You'll need structural calculations from a qualified engineer specifying the correct column size for your application. Your local Building Control office will need to inspect the installation.
How is the weight of a Universal Column calculated?
Universal Column weight is calculated as: Length (m) × kg/m weight. For example, a 3-metre length of 203x203x60 UC weighs 3 × 60 = 180kg. Our online calculator automatically works this out based on your selected size and length.
Can Universal Columns be used horizontally as beams?
Yes, UCs can be used as beams, but they are less efficient than UBs for spanning applications due to their squarer profile. However, UCs are sometimes specified where bi-axial bending occurs or where a deeper section isn't practical.
Can Universal Columns be welded?
Yes, S275JR Universal Columns are fully weldable using standard MIG, TIG, or arc welding methods. For thicker sections and site welding, ensure proper preheat procedures are followed and consider using a qualified welder for structural connections.
Do you offer next day delivery on Universal Columns?
Yes, we offer next day delivery across mainland UK on orders placed before our cut-off time, subject to stock availability and delivery location. Contact us for delivery to Scotland, highlands, and islands. Note that heavier columns may require specific transport arrangements due to weight.
