What do the numbers mean (e.g., 100x100x6)?
The first two numbers are the external dimensions in millimetres (width x height, which are equal for square sections), and the third number is the wall thickness. So 100x100x6 means a 100mm square section with 6mm thick walls.
What is the difference between SHS, RHS, and CHS?
SHS (Square Hollow Section) has equal sides forming a square profile. RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) has unequal sides forming a rectangle. CHS (Circular Hollow Section) has a round profile. SHS is preferred where equal strength in both axes is needed or for aesthetic reasons.
What is the difference between hot-finished and cold-formed hollow sections?
Hot-finished sections (BS EN 10210) are formed at high temperatures, resulting in consistent material properties and rounded corners. Cold-formed sections (BS EN 10219) are shaped at room temperature, typically with tighter corner radii. Hot-finished sections generally have better structural properties for demanding applications.
How do I choose between 6mm and 10mm wall thickness?
Thicker walls provide greater load-carrying capacity but add weight and cost. For lighter-duty applications like handrails, gates, and light framing, 6mm is often sufficient. For structural columns, heavily loaded posts, or where maximum strength is required, 10mm is the better choice.
What is the difference between self colour and shotblast painted?
Self colour (no paint) is the natural mill finish - ideal if you plan to paint, galvanise, or powder coat the steel yourself. Shotblast painted includes a red oxide primer coating applied after shot blasting, providing temporary corrosion protection and a clean surface ready for top coating.
What steel grade is the SHS?
Our Square Hollow Sections are supplied to BS EN 10210 S275J0H specification, a hot-finished structural hollow section grade. S275J0H offers excellent weldability and impact resistance, making it suitable for structural and general engineering applications.
Can Square Hollow Sections be cut to any length?
Yes, we cut SHS to your specified length. Simply enter your required length in millimetres when ordering. Minimum order length is 100mm.
How is the weight of SHS calculated?
SHS weight depends on the external size, wall thickness, and length. The weight per metre is determined by the cross-sectional area of steel. Our online calculator automatically works this out based on your selected size, thickness, and length.
Can Square Hollow Sections be welded?
Yes, S275J0H Square Hollow Sections are fully weldable using standard MIG, TIG, or arc welding methods. The hollow section can be welded at any point around the profile. For corner welds, ensure good penetration and consider the internal access for inspection.

Untreated mild steel will rust when exposed to moisture. For outdoor use, we recommend the shotblast painted option as a base, followed by appropriate top coats. For long-term outdoor exposure or harsh environments, consider hot-dip galvanising after fabrication.
