What is a pile reinforcement cage used for?

A pile cage reinforces a bored or augered concrete pile. The 6 T16 main bars carry the structural load while the 8mm rings hold them in position and confine the concrete, so the pile resists bending and shear as well as compression. Common uses include mini-piled foundations, underpinning and restricted-access piling.

What diameter pile cage do I need?

As a rule of thumb the cage outer diameter is the pile bore minus the concrete cover on each side (typically 40 to 75mm per side). For example, a 250 to 300mm bore commonly takes a 150 to 200mm cage. Always follow your engineer's specification where one is provided.

What ring spacing should I choose?

250mm centres is the common standard for lightly loaded piles. Closer centres (200mm or 150mm) add confinement and shear capacity for heavier loading, and are usually taken from the engineer's bar schedule. Tighter spacing simply means more rings, which is reflected in the fabricated weight and price above.

How much does a pile cage weigh?

This 6 bar cage ranges from 31.0 kg for the lightest 3m configuration to 70.4 kg for the heaviest 6m configuration. The exact nominal weight for every configuration is shown in the table above.

What standard are pile cages manufactured to?

Main bars are Grade B500B high-tensile reinforcement to BS 4449:2005 and rings are formed to BS 8666 Shape Code 75, welded into a cage with full CARES mill traceability. (Reinforcement is certified through the CARES scheme rather than CE marking, as EN 10080 is not a harmonised standard.)
